"Family Feast" launched to celebrate intangible cultural heritage day in Yunnan
6/26/2020

A grand family feast with a great variety of local cuisines has been held in Kunming, capital of southwestern China's Yunnan Province to celebrate the Cultural and Natural Heritage Day which fell on Saturday.

The event, "Gudian (Old Yunnan) Family Feast" was held on the bank of the Dianchi Lake in Kunming.

Tourists were immersed in the beautiful sunset and a rich flavor of delicacies. Local cooks made special cuisines rich in flavors, such as "Rubing" -- a traditional goat's cheese, "Shao Erkuai" -- a kind of rice pancake normally eaten for breakfast, rice noodles and ham to satisfy a variety of taste buds.

Some of the foods and utensils used for delicacies at the event are listed as the national intangible cultural heritage in China.

"The Hani, Dai and Jingpo ethnic groups eat dyed glutinous rice. They use flowers to dye rice into a variety of colors. This time we made seven colors. So you can taste the flavor of flowers in rice. And the flowering rice is listed as intangible cultural heritage. You can’t find the dyestuff in other places. The moment you eat it, you realize you are back in Yunnan, your beautiful home in Yunnan," said Ren Huaican, founder of "Gudian Family Feast".

Just like a family reunion, friends and tourists, young and old, enjoyed the happy moment in this family feast.

"This is a unique family feast. It feels warmer than previous years, particularly amid the COVID-19 epidemic. Both our dishes and culture are about intangible cultural heritage. They pass our delicious food and culture on," said Huang Shaocheng, a Kunming resident.

Since 2006, China has celebrated cultural heritage day on the second Saturday of June. In 2017, it was renamed Cultural and Natural Heritage Day.
