Yunnan embracing autumn harvest, rural tourism
9/23/2020

Yunnan is embracing the golden autumn bumper harvest, rural tourism is also ushering in a peak season.

In Kunming City, southwest China's Yunnan Province, special local pears dubbed "Baozhu", meaning "treasured pearl" in Chinese, are ripe with century-old trees laden with sweet fruits.

The pear orchards have become popular tourist attractions as people come here in spring to appreciate the beautiful pear flowers and in autumn to have fun picking palatable fruits.

As most of China is embracing the golden autumn bumper harvest, rural tourism is also ushering in a peak season.

In Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, over 670 hectares of terraced rice field are entering harvest season, with local farmers busy reaping and tourists flocking in to enjoy the picturesque scenery of lush rice paddies.

Ran Hongbing is one of the local farmers who are busy recently reaping, threshing and drying rice in the traditional way as the weather has been fine and ideal for harvest.

"I have planted more than 20 mu (about 1.34 hectares) of rice. From now on, it will probably take about 10 days to finish harvesting. The yield of dry rice in husk will probably reach 7,000 to 7,500 kilograms this year, and I'm sure that the income will be about 100,000 yuan (about 15,000 U.S. dollars)," said Ran.

In recent years, the local agricultural sector has improved the terraced fields in a comprehensive way, turning dry land into paddy fields, which now have amounted to over 670 hectares.

Moreover, local government has been striving to develop rural tourism for terraced fields sightseeing based on the organic rice industry, constantly promoting the integrated development of agriculture and tourism.

This year, a special market is set around the orchard in the Chenggong District to celebrate the third Chinese farmers' harvest festival which fell on Tuesday. Tourists can enjoy many hand-made pear products at the market, like dried fruits, preserves and pear syrup, after having fun picking pears in the orchard. Meanwhile live-streaming promotion is also carried out at the market to boost the sales of the products.

Zhangjiakou, a city of north China's Hebei Province, is seeing a bumper harvest of potatoes. Harvesters and workers are bustling about in the fields in Saibei administrative district, reaping over 4,020 hectares of potatoes.

"We planted about 333 hectares of potatoes (this year), of which 233 hectares of potatoes will be processed into various products, and the remaining 100 hectares of potatoes will be sold on the market. The quality of potatoes here is very good, and the yield this year is also very high," said Yue Shuguang, a cropland contractor.

In recent years, local authorities in the district have been constantly deepening the reform in land reclamation system and promote the development of modern agricultural cluster. As the pace of modernizing local agriculture keeps picking up, large-scale and intensive farming has become the new normal of its agricultural development.

Initiated in 2018, the Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival coincides with the Autumnal Equinox on lunar Chinese calendar each year. Falling on September 22 this year, it is the first national festival held specifically for farmers, featuring a variety of activities, such as live-streaming promotion, cultural performances, fairs, farming experiences communications and more.
