Key projects in Yunnan progress smoothly
10/16/2020

Many projects, involving the construction of major tunnels and bridges in China have yielded fruits in recent days. Their completion and operation will help to cut travel time for passengers and increase local transport efficiency.

The longest one-way tunnel on the 1,000-plus-km long Kunming-Vientiane Railway linking China and the Laos was holed through on Thursday.

Stretching 9.85 kilometers, the Nanlianshan Tunnel is located near the urban area of Jinghong City, southwest China's Yunnan Province.

It marked an important milestone in the construction of the cross-border railway, and laid a solid foundation for the timely completion of the mega project.

So far, 82 tunnels along the line have been drilled through, according to the China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd.

The China-Laos Railway extends from Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province, to Vientiane, capital of Laos. With the construction started in 2016, the project is scheduled to be completed and opened to traffic at the end of 2021. By then, it will take a night's time for a trip from Kunming to Vientiane.

China has recently holed over 12,000 meters of tunnels in the Guiyang-Nanning high-speed railway, which indicates that the construction of the project has progressed halfway.

With a total length of 481 kilometers, the railway line will cut travel time from Nanning to Guiyang from over 10 hours to less than two hours. With a designed maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the line is expected to go into service in 2023.

A road-rail steel bridge weighing 20,000 tonnes was successfully rotated in Pingxiang City, east China's Jiangxi Province on Wednesday.

With an investment of 1.364 billion yuan (some 200 million U.S. dollars), the bridge plays an important role in easing traffic jams near the local coach station.
